THE MYTHS AROUND VEGAN FOOD

From childhood through to adulthood, we are taught what to believe, how to live and of course what to eat.  We were conditioned to believe the following:

  • meat is ‘the’ best source of protein therefore we should have it regularly, hence the ‘meat and 2 veg’ concept!
  • fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B12 as well as being rich in calcium and we should enjoy this twice a week!
  • eggs are high in protein, vitamins and minerals and a good source of vitamin D and B12!
  • eating vegan foods is too expensive!
  • preparing vegan foods is time consuming!

Some of these statements may be true however eating a plant-based diet provides you much more healthy and natural nutrients, supporting the body and mind without harming animals and their welfare as well as supporting our already overburdened mother earth through sustainability!

In regards to a vegan diet being expensive – simply not true. Essential staples on a vegan diet are: fruit, vegetables and beans. Extra items like processed proteins (tofu, tempeh, seitan) can be a little more pricey however no way as expensive as meats, poultry and fish and if eaten in balance to the staples, works out way less expensive than those on a meat/fish diet.

 
However, if, on occasion, you want to enjoy ready prepared meals for convenience, then these vegan versions can be quite pricey therefore I always suggest and advise my clients that buying fresh ingredients and cooking from scratch is not only better for your health, as you are cooking with ‘whole’ ingredients and omit all the added sugar, fats & salts, they are much more reasonable in terms of cost so the answer truly is………… GET PLANNING, PREPPING & COOKING and this will start to save you pennies in your pocket (and bank)!
 
 
Secondly, the myth about cooking vegan being time consuming – definitely not. As a vegan chef who cooks at home as well as cooking for clients and making meal preps, I can certainly say first hand that this simply isn’t true. Like any type of cooking, if you prep in advance, ensure you have the right foods, herbs & spices to hand, then the actual ‘cooking/baking’ part is simple and can be straight forward.

“I approached Guilda to teach me and my 14 year old daughter how to cook creative vegan dishes including cakes.  We had a 4 hour 1-2-1 cooking class online (via Zoom) which went smoothly and Guilda was very patient and attentive as she taught us the different types of nutritional benefits of the dishes we chose to cook (Victoria Sponge, Tofu Scramble, Mac’n’Cheese sauce and Shepherds Pie veggie style).  My daughter has recently having digestion issues when having dairy and eggs hence wanting to opt for a more plant-based diet for her to see how her health benefited.

We loved the dishes and enjoyed them for dinner and the rest of the family (not keen on veganism) devoured all the dishes and cake and were shocked when we told them what they enjoyed was all 100% plant-based.  Just goes to show, if you don’t tell people, they will never know if the flavours are delicious and the dishes look good.  We have already booked another session with Guilda beginning of May for my daughters birthday and will be creating some ‘Afternoon Tea’ type dishes as well as pancakes & waffles.  I do recommend booking time with Guilda as she is both caring and knowledgable as well as creative and of course it is a fun activity to do to fill up our time during ‘lockdown’!  Thanks Guilda and looking forward to cooking soon.

Happy to recommend Guilda when wanting to eat healthy vegan foods and cakes and treats.

As a healthy conscious family, we requested for mostly RAW Vegan foods and what was delivered was absolutely stunning to look at and delicious. We especially loved the raw lasagne and the raw key lime cheesecake.

We had a few cooked appetisers also which were all delicious and pretty!
