Tomato ketchup is a delicious condiment accompanied with some our favourite snacks and side dishes, more famously, french fries.

Here is my delicious recipe to make your own ketchup.

  • 8 Medjool dates, pitted
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 142g tomato puree can
  • 3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida powder

  1. Place the pitted dates in a bowl and pour with 1/2 cup boiling water over them and soak for 30 minutes.

  2. In your blender add tomato paste, vinegar, salt, asafoetida, mustard, allspice and 1/4 cup of  the boiling water which the dates have been soaking in and mix and then add the dates and remaining water and blend until smooth.

  3. Taste the mixture and add seasoning as needed.

  4. Pour the ketchup into an airtight container and store it in the fridge until ready to use. This should last at least 2 weeks in the fridge.

Delicious enjoyed with sweet potato or white potato fries
